Flower Under The Pavement
Description
After enduring the quarantine imposed by Covid-19, as a sophomore, I was eager to embark on the creation of a short film, a sentiment shared by many filmmakers during those stifling times. As the world began to reopen and vaccines became widely available, I initiated the preparatory work for shooting. "Flower Under The Pavement" was conceived with the intention of filming in a location distant from the urban frenzy of New York, where I had spent the quarantine longing for a change of scenery. My curiosity about the many states and regions of the US I had yet to visit led us to choose Maryland, the home state of our director, Grace, and playwright, Lily, as our filming location. The screenplay was an adaptation of poetry written by Lily, an exceptional poet and photographer whose writing captivates and evokes thoughts of Lana Del Rey's songs.
"Flower Under The Pavement" tells a simple story, and Grace and I were committed to aligning the film closely with Lily's poetic style. Considering Covid-related concerns, we decided to keep the crew to a minimum. A week before shooting, I rediscovered a large stash of film rolls I had purchased before the pandemic, intending to document my travels to Europe with my Super 8 camera for the Cannes Film Festival in 2020, only to forget them in my kitchen as the pandemic unfolded. Thus, we chose to shoot the film on these film rolls, a decision that ultimately enriched the film's aesthetic, making it more congruent with the story's essence.
